The Cost of Urban Expansion
Earth Story Art is partnering with CREATE Core Courage to shed light on Earth Justice. A core tenant of Earth Justice is exploring and understanding human's interaction with and effect on the Earth. As population increases in New Jersey, already the most densely populated state, we turn green space to gray (urban) space causing an increased tax on the environment and a resulting decrease in precious natural landscapes.
In Monmouth County for example, since 1986 over 44,000 acres (of which 86% used to be agriculture or forest) have been converted for urban use without adequate environmental planning. This leads us to ask, "What is the true cost of Urban Expansion?" First we must acknowledge the full impact of resource depletion, varied forms of pollution and a failing waste management system, along with the resulting effects on our physical health in order to begin seeing the bigger picture. In addition, we need to take into account the benefits of green space, which we are losing at a rapid pace. Studies show that open natural spaces rejuvenate ones overall well-being and are necessary to provide balance in the greater ecosystem. Furthermore, without natural spaces our long-term resilience decreases leading to negative effects in our health and the health of the planet.
By using art as an expressive medium, our mission is to bring awareness to the unseen Cost of Urban Expansion. Join us in sharing and expanding the mission of Earth Justice, because a healthier earth provides for all of us.
